Mexico Invests in Social Programs to Boost Economy

The Government of Mexico is preparing for possible tariffs imposed by Donald Trump and is focusing its efforts on strengthening the domestic market. One of the strategies involves increasing the minimum wage and social programs. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that up to one trillion pesos will be allocated for pensions, scholarships, and other programs for the year 2026.

During a morning conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that registrations have already begun for pensions and new supports, such as the pension for women aged 60 to 64 and scholarships for students at basic levels. The budget allocated for these programs is expected to increase significantly, possibly reaching one trillion pesos next year.

According to the president, the investment in social programs aims to represent 2.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This equates to about 950 billion pesos, a considerable figure that demonstrates the Government's commitment to the population. Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of strengthening the domestic market and mentioned that Mexico leads in terms of social support for its population.

Regarding the strategy to address Trump's tariffs, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of strengthening the domestic market through public investment, promotion of national products, and increasing the minimum wage. Although no details were given on the amount or date of the wage increase, it is expected to be part of a comprehensive plan for 2026.

The president celebrated the pause in the 25% tariffs announced by Trump and described it as a victory for the country. However, she warned that tariffs remain a possibility and that it is essential to strengthen the internal economy. She thanked lawmakers for ensuring economic support through social programs that benefit millions of Mexicans. New programs, such as the pension for women and universal scholarships, are expected to start benefiting the population from this year and the next.
